Signs of Oral Health Problems in Pets

Many dental diseases and oral health problems cause no symptoms in their earliest stages. You may be able to spot the development of plaque or other issues during regular teeth cleaning at home. Our veterinarian can detect oral health problems and dental diseases early on. Signs of oral and dental disease in pets include:

  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar
  • Drooling or dropping food
  • Bleeding from the mouth or gums

What To Expect at a Pet Dental Heath Exam

Regular brushing and home care can reduce your pet’s risk for developing dental problems, however, some animal companions are prone to tooth decay or gum disease. Professional cleaning by a veterinarian can help prevent tooth loss and protect your dog or cat’s teeth and gums.

During professional dental cleaning, a technician scales the teeth and scrapes plaque from below the gum line. Our veterinary team will check for signs of gum disease and tooth decay.  Full mouth radiographs, X-rays just like the ones routinely performed at a human dental appointment, also aide in the diagnosis and treatment of dental disease.

Our veterinarian will complete further dental treatment as necessary, including extraction of fractured or abscessed teeth and teeth severely damaged by periodontal disease. Pet dental procedures require the use of anesthesia to complete the necessary medical and surgical therapy in order to keep the patient safe. Before receiving anesthesia, all pets should undergo a pre-anesthesia blood screen that ensures your four-legged friend is in good physical condition. This blood test can measure organ function and general health, and can even provide valuable information that our veterinarians can refer to in case your pet gets sick in the future.

Our veterinarians take every precaution to keep your pet safe and comfortable during pet dentistry. We monitor vital signs, including blood pressure, respiration and heart rate with a continuous EKG. We administer intravenous (IV) fluids as necessary, and prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers if we feel your pet might experience pain or develop an infection.

We at Creekside Animal Clinic are already gearing up for Dental Health Month 2017. Periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed health issue in our companion animals. The doctors at Creekside offer the very best care to maintain your pet's oral health. "Bad breath" is a sign of periodontal disease, which is destruction of the anatomy that holds the teeth in place caused by bacterial and inflammation. If your pet has "Bad breath" please schedule a oral health exam with one of our doctors. We want to work with you to keep your pet's mouth healthy and smiling! If your pet is scheduled for a teeth cleaning appointment, the exam will be free.
